The Indian peafowl is native to India and Sri Lanka.
It lives in polygamous flocks, formed by one male and 4 – 5 females.
Its mating season starts in April and ends in May.
During the day it usually stays on the ground in close proximity to its territory, then it rests and spends the night in the trees. Its diet consists of seeds, berries, fruits of trees and insects. It forages solely on the ground near dense growth and trees. Male of the Indian peafowl species is reputed for its decorative plumage. It has a glossy blue body and a long tail, which during the mating season unfolds into the shape of a majestic feather fan. However, the considerable length of the tail is not formed by the rectrices. On the contrary, they are short and hidden under the elongated uppertail covert feathers with colorful eyes. Female is smaller, brown, has a lighter abdomen, upper part of its neck is covered by green metallic plumage and a short tail rounds it off.
