Bratislava Zoo Welcomes a New South African Lioness

1. November 2025

We have exciting news – a new resident has joined us here at Bratislava Zoo! Please meet Leia, a beautiful South African lioness who arrived from Zoo Dvorec near Borovany in the Czech Republic. She was safely transported to Bratislava on October 8, 2025, and the trip went smoothly. Leia is now going through her acclimatization period, getting used to her new surroundings.

Leia belongs to the vulnerable subspecies of the South African lion (Panthera leo krugeri). Once she’s fully settled in, she’ll gradually be introduced to our male lion Samba, who has been living here since 2023 after coming from Zoo Hodonín. Samba originally arrived to join lioness Jawa, but unfortunately, the two didn’t bond – Jawa wasn’t interested, and sadly, she passed away this summer. Since lions are highly social big cats, it was very important for Samba to have a new companion.

Leia was born at Zoo Dvorec, which has a long history of successfully breeding South African lions. In 2017, the zoo celebrated the birth of five cubs, followed by another four the next year – Leia comes from this very line and is now seven years old.

“We’re very happy about Leia’s arrival. She’s doing well so far, and we believe she’ll soon feel at home in her new environment. Once she’s fully adapted to her enclosure, we’ll start introducing her to Samba step by step,” says zoologist Róbert Kondrk.

At the moment, Leia is still getting used to her new home. Visitors can already spot her in the indoor part of the lion enclosure. If you don’t see her there, it just means she’s relaxing in her private indoor area – we’re giving her the freedom to choose where she feels most comfortable while she settles in. Gradually, our keepers will start letting her explore the outdoor part of the exhibit too.

Lions are the most social of all big cats. In the wild, they live in groups where they hunt together, raise cubs, and protect their territory. That’s why we’re hopeful Leia’s arrival will bring companionship and comfort to Samba – and that, over time, they’ll become a bonded pair.

The South African lion, especially those with rare white coloring, naturally occurs only in the Timbavati region on the edge of Kruger National Park in South Africa. Only a few dozen individuals live in the wild today, which makes breeding programs in zoos crucial for preserving this remarkable species.
